For your website to generate new business, new customers, and new opportunities, obviously it has to be found. To be found, your website has to play nice with Google.
One of my favorite voices in the industry, Andy Crestodina, who works for one of the slickest web design companies, Orbit Media Studios in Chicago, always shares really insightful information on their company blog. I highly recommend it.
Today, Andy posted a blog titled, “Why Don’t I Rank? How Does Google Search Work?“. He explains how Google uses over 200 factors to determine how they rank websites, and he identifies the three most important:
- Your site isn’t an established authority. (Link Popularity)
- You don’t have a dedicated page. (Keyphrase Focus)
- You aren’t using the phrase properly. (Indicating Relevance)
Check out his full post here, where he explains each of those three factors, and lists a few more as well.
I think you’ll find it useful, both for considering changes to existing websites, and incorporating into new websites.
